Wrinkle Reducing Injections

with Botulinum Toxin A

Many of us want to look as good as possible as we get older; however, the prospect of having cosmetic surgery can be daunting. The good news is, it is possible to achieve fresher and younger looking skin without resorting to invasive surgical techniques. Today, an increasing range of men and women desire aesthetic enhancements with wrinkle reducing injections. Botulinum Toxin A has proven to be one of the best methods to reduce common signs of aging, whilst keeping a natural look, with minimal downtime and minimal side effects. As well as rejuvenating the ageing face, a skin injection with Botulinum Toxin A (such as BOTOX® or Dysport®) can prevent existing fine lines from developing into deep wrinkles.

Treatment Options with Botulinum Toxin A

For some, wrinkles can occur as early as their 20s or as late as 35-plus. Where lines develop, how deep your lines get and at what time they turn up first, depends on genetics and in what way and how much you have expressed yourself by frowning and squinting over the years. If you feel conscious of your fine lines or wrinkles, injections with Botulinum Toxin A can help you rejuvenate your face and regain a fresher appearance, as it has the ability to temporarily weaken the muscles that cause those frown lines and other facial wrinkles that form as we age.

Today, most treatments with Botulinum Toxin A as a wrinkle-reducing injection are sought after for temporary cosmetic benefits such as:

  • Reduced frown lines or scowl lines; i.e. the vertical lines between the eyebrows or on the forehead, also-called central brow or glabellar lines,

  • Smoothing of furrows; i.e. the horizontal lines on the forehead

  • Reduction of crow’s feet; i.e. the lines at the corners of the eyes and near the temples (periocular lines or lateral canthal lines)

  • Reduction of bunny lines, i.e. the lines at the side of the upper nose (nasoglabellar lines)

  • Improved look of other moderate to severe facial lines or wrinkles.

Newer areas of treatments with wrinkle reducing injections in the face are: *

  • Smoothing of fine lines above the upper lip (perioral lip lines or rhytides)

  • Smoothing of the nasolabial lines, i.e. the creases that run from each corner of the nose to the corners of the mouth, commonly known as “smile lines” or “laugh lines”

  • Treatment of exaggerated upper gum smile known as “gummy smile”

  • Treatment of chin puckering

  • Treatment of uneven chin areas

  • Treatment of asymmetric smile

  • Treatment of necklines

  • Combination with other aesthetic surgical procedures of the face.

Besides the cosmetic use for the reduction of fine lines or wrinkles, injections made from Botulinum Toxin A, such as BOTOX® or Dysport® can provide a wide range of additional benefits, from treating chronic migraines, severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis), increased muscle stiffness, eye muscle problems (strabismus) or abnormal spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm), acne or incontinence.

What is Botulinum Toxin?

The active ingredient in wrinkle reducing injections such as BOTOX® or Dysport® is called Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botulinum Toxin A is a highly purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which has the ability to temporarily reduce or block the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines and other facial wrinkles that form as we age. Botulinum Toxin Type A now has over 20 recognised uses and is licensed in over 85 countries. After wrinkle reducing injections with for instance BOTOX® or Dysport®, patients will notice a more rejuvenated face, with visible reduction or removal of their fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkle Reducing Injections with Botulinum Toxin A are mostly used to temporarily improve the look of crow’s feet lines, frown lines on the forehead or between the eyebrows, furrows (vertical lines on the forehead) and bunny lines.*

What is the difference between Botulinum Toxin A and BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is the most common word used for Botulinum Toxin A, a substance used for, amongst others, wrinkle reducing injections and rejuvenating the ageing face. However, BOTOX® is in fact a registered trademark belonging to the multi-specialty health care company Allergan.

What are the Benefits of Wrinkle Reducing Injections over a Traditional Facelift?

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation is becoming increasing popular, this can partially be attributed to the temporary effects: Whilst, if you were not happy with the result of a traditional facelift surgery, you would either need to live with the result or undergo a second operation to hopefully correct any concern, the result of wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A is temporary. If you are not entirely satisfied with the outcome of your wrinkle reducing injection, you can simply give it a “new shot” 6 months later; there is no commitment to the permanent result of a surgical procedure.
