Wrinkle Reducing Injections

with Botulinum Toxin A

Many of us want to look as good as possible as we get older; however, the prospect of having cosmetic surgery can be daunting. The good news is, it is possible to achieve fresher and younger looking skin without resorting to invasive surgical techniques. Today, an increasing range of men and women desire aesthetic enhancements with wrinkle reducing injections. Botulinum Toxin A has proven to be one of the best methods to reduce common signs of aging, whilst keeping a natural look, with minimal downtime and minimal side effects. As well as rejuvenating the ageing face, a skin injection with Botulinum Toxin A (such as BOTOX® or Dysport®) can prevent existing fine lines from developing into deep wrinkles.

Treatment Options with Botulinum Toxin A

For some, wrinkles can occur as early as 20-something or as late as 35-plus. Where lines develop, how deep your lines get and at what time they turn up first, depends on genetics and in what way and how much you have expressed yourself by frowning and squinting over the years. If you feel conscious of your fine lines or wrinkles, injections with Botulinum Toxin A can help you rejuvenate your face and regaining a fresher appearance, as it has the ability to temporarily weaken the muscles that cause those frown lines and other facial wrinkles that form as we age.

Today, most treatments with Botulinum Toxin A as a wrinkle-reducing injection are sought after for temporary cosmetic benefits such as: *

  • Reduced frown lines or scowl lines; i.e. the vertical lines between the eyebrows or on the forehead, also-called central brow or glabellar lines,

  • Smoothing of furrows; i.e. the horizontal lines on the forehead

  • Reduction of crow’s feet; i.e. the lines at the corners of the eyes and near the temples (periocular lines or lateral canthal lines)

  • Reduction of bunny lines, i.e. the lines at the side of the upper nose (nasoglabellar lines)

  • Improved look of other moderate to severe facial lines or wrinkles.

Newer areas of treatments with wrinkle reducing injections in the face are: *

  • Smoothing of fine lines above the upper lip (perioral lip lines or rhytides)

  • Smoothing of the nasolabial lines, i.e. the creases that run from each corner of the nose to the corners of the mouth, commonly known as “smile lines” or “laugh lines”

  • Treatment of exaggerated upper gum smile known as “gummy smile”

  • Treatment of chin puckering

  • Treatment of uneven chin areas

  • Treatment of asymmetric smile

  • Treatment of necklines

  • Combination with other aesthetic surgical procedures of the face.

Besides the cosmetic use for the reduction of fine lines or wrinkles, injections made from Botulinum Toxin A, such as such as BOTOX® or Dysport® can provide a wide range of additional benefits, from help treating chronic migraine, severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis), increased muscle stiffness, eye muscle problems (strabismus) or abnormal spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm), acne or incontinence.

Treatment Options with Botulinum Toxin A

What is Botulinum Toxin?

The active ingredient in wrinkle reducing injections such as BOTOX® or Dysport® is called Botulinum Toxin Type A. Botulinum Toxin A is a highly purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which has the ability to temporarily reduce or block the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines and other facial wrinkles that form as we age. Botulinum Toxin Type A now has over 20 recognised uses and is licensed in over 85 countries. After wrinkle reducing injections with for instance BOTOX® or Dysport®, patients will notice a more rejuvenated face, with visible reduction or removal of their fine lines and wrinkles. Wrinkle Reducing Injections with Botulinum Toxin A are mostly used to temporarily improve the look of crow’s feet lines, frown lines on the forehead or between the eyebrows, furrows (vertical lines on the forehead) and bunny lines.*

What is the difference between Botulinum Toxin A and BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is the most common word used for Botulinum Toxin A, a substance used for, amongst others, wrinkle reducing injections and rejuvenating the ageing face. However, BOTOX® is in fact a registered trademark belonging to the multi-specialty health care company Allergan.

What are the Benefits of Wrinkle Reducing Injections over a Traditional Facelift?

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation is becoming increasing popular, this can partially be attributed to the temporary effects: Whilst, if you were not happy with the result of a traditional facelift surgery, you would either need to live with the result or undergo a second operation to hopefully correct any concern, the result of wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A is temporary. If you are not entirely satisfied with the outcome of your wrinkle reducing injection, you can simply give it a “new shot” 6 months later; there is no commitment to the permanent result of a surgical procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Is Botulinum Toxin A a safe treatment?

Despite being a toxin, Botulinum Toxin A is actually one of the safest drugs recognised. Side effects such as redness, swelling, allergic reaction, over-treatment, or infection typically will be mild and subside quickly. Ensure you choose a qualified practitioner that will develop a customised treatment plan for you to ensure optimal results and minimise the risks.

Am I a suitable candidate for wrinkle reducing injections/Botulinum Toxin A?

Wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A will be safe for a broad range of individuals. Patients with a history of allergic reactions should be tested prior to receiving injections. Patients who have a skin infection at the planned injection site should wait with their treatment. Please consult with an experienced medical practitioner to discuss your candidacy.

Which areas can be treated with Botulinum Toxin A?

Wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A can be administered on almost any part of the body. Newer areas of treatments with wrinkle reducing injections in the face are the upper lip, the smile/laugh lines (nasolabial lines), uneven chin areas and neck lines.

How often can I repeat a treatment with Botulinum Toxin?

BOTOX® or Dysport® injections can be repeated at certain intervals (not affecting the patient’s health). With the repeated treatments, the aesthetic rejuvenation effect lasts longer. Studies indicate that repeated treatments with Botulinum Toxin Type A can also stimulate increased skin elasticity and thickness – further adding to the wrinkle-reducing effects.

Will my Botulinum Toxin injection be tailored to suit my needs?

Yes, it will. All procedures concerning your body and your health should be tailored to suit your personal needs and circumstances. Medical aesthetics procedures are no exception.
First, all wrinkle reducing injections should give a natural end result. The amount of Botulinum Toxin administered to achieve this might vary depending on the patient. Second, the anti-wrinkle treatment should align with the patient’s lifestyles, jobs, and personal wishes, which will differ greatly from patient to patient. An elderly person might want a stronger “nothing must move dosage” in order to smoothen lines and wrinkles whilst a younger person might prefer a micro-injection as a preventative dosage in order to simply slow down or postpone first fine signs of skin ageing.

What precautions should I take before the treatment?

There are no particular precautions to be taken before a treatment with wrinkle reducing injections like BOTOX® or Dysport®. The patient can virtually hop in during their lunchbreak and be ready to go to back to work half an hour later.

How long does a wrinkle reducing treatment take?

One session of wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A treatment can take anywhere from 5-45 minutes, depending on the area being treated. The most common facial treatments take about 10-15 minutes.

How long is the recovery and downtime?

There is no downtime with Wrinkle Reducing Injections with Botulinum Toxin A. The patient can return to normal activities immediately after the treatment. A little redness or swelling is likely to be noticeable at the incision points. This will subside after a few hours.

What results can I expect?

Patients will notice a visible smoothing of their fine lines and wrinkles within 24 to 48 hours, resulting in a more rejuvenated face and a fresher, more youthful appearance.

How long does the result last?

Wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A are temporary, lasting between 3-9 months, the average is about 6 months, depending on the brand, composition, and unique metabolism of each patient. Studies indicate that repeated treatments also stimulate increased skin elasticity and thickness – further adding to and extending the wrinkle-reducing effects.
Botulinum Toxin injections for other causes might last longer; injections to treat excessive perspiration of armpits for instance provide results lasting for up to 8 months. Please contact your medical practitioner to get more info on the particular treatment you desire.

Can wrinkle reducing injections prevent me from getting wrinkles?

You might ask yourself why you would inject your face with wrinkle reducing injections if you do not have any deep lines. The trick is to inject fine lines just after they first turned up. This will weaken the muscle that causes “over-expression” and therefore prevent the lines from developing further! In a nutshell: wrinkle reducing injections with Botulinum Toxin A can prevent you from getting more or deeper lines. You might notice the first lines in your late ‘20s or early ‘30s. If you are very expressive with your face or prone to get lines, you are a good candidate for starting wrinkle reducing injections early.

Can Botulinum Toxin A make my wrinkles go away?

Your wrinkles will not go away completely but you will notice a visible smoothing of your fine lines and wrinkles resulting in a rejuvenated face and fresher, more youthful appearance. Please contact us at CapeMAC to discuss your desired outcome with Dr Bagwandeen.

Can Botulinum Toxin A help with sweating?

Yes, Botulinum Toxin A has been proven to help treat excessive armpit sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis). However, it can be used just about anywhere on your body to improve sweat breakouts and minimise pores. The areas most treated are the armpits, the forehead/scalp and the palms of the hands.

Can Botulinum Toxin A help with Acne?

Yes. Botulinum Toxin A is well-known for its abilities to not only help with the onset of aging but also with adult acne (patients need to have stable hormones before they can commence treatment). When injected directly into the skin, Botulinum Toxin A helps eliminate large pores, reduces oil production and minimises breakouts.

Can Botulinum Toxin A help with Migraine?

Yes, Botulinum Toxin A can be used to help chronic migraines and painful trigger points. Botulinum Toxin A works in the sense that it relaxes tense muscles, whilst also affecting the pain receptors and the release of pain transmitters involved in the migraine process.

Can Botulinum Toxin A help with softening my hard jaw line?

Due to excessive muscle activity such as gum chewing or teeth grinding while sleeping, some of us are faced with strong jaw muscles (Masseter muscles), resulting in a rather square jaw appearance. In some cases, the excessive muscle activity over time leads to painful jaw joint problems (temporomandibular joint – TMJ). Botulinum Toxin A weakens the overactive and enlarged muscles in the side of the face, which helps to restore a natural oval shape of the lower face and improves painful jaw problems.

Does it make any sense to start Botulinum Toxin injections as early as my 20s?

Yes, it can make sense!
Medical aesthetics is not only good for getting back the look you liked so much about yourself or that you aspire to have; but also, and equally exciting, to keep the look that you love so much right now. The idea is to be preventative rather than reactive! There are a lot of men and women in their 20s who get wrinkle reducing injections simply because they do not want to start developing fine lines let alone wrinkles in their forehead, or around the eyes, mouth, etc. At a younger age, anti-ageing treatments like wrinkle reducing injections are all about prevention.
For instance, if you notice that you have a tendency to wrinkle your face, furrow those brows, pull up your forehead in astonishment, or when applying mascara, etc. and you do not want to get lines there a few years down the line, then a Botulinum Toxin injection might be the right treatment for you. It can help to conserve the look you have right now.

Will my face look frozen?

No, your face will not look frozen. When Botulinum Toxin A is carefully and precisely injected in small quantities, you will still be able to see fine lines in the face. Your face will look natural and you will still be able to be expressive. Friends, family and colleagues will notice your younger and fresher appearance but will not be certain as to why.

Will I look worse when I stop using Botulinum Toxin?

No. That is a misconception. If people stop using wrinkle reducing injections or dermal fillers, they will simply look like they did not do it. Early studies, however, now indicate that injections with Botox and dermal fillers also stimulate the production of collagen, increasing skin elasticity and thickness – not only further adding to the wrinkle-reducing effects but also having a longer-lasting effect.
