Frequently asked questions
What areas can be lifted?
The SILHOUETTE SOFT® facial rejuvenation technique achieves best results for mid and lower facial areas like the large cheek area, but it can also be used to lift the brow, upper face and the neck. An application of SILHOUETTE SOFT® around jaw lines, for example, will give a facial contour and youthful shape.
Am I a suitable candidate for a Thread Lift with SILHOUETTE SOFT®?
If you are in good physical condition, if you have a normal thickness of the skin, then you are already a good candidate for the Silhouette Lift facial rejuvenation treatment.
What is the best age for SILHOUETTE SOFT?
The treatment achieves excellent results for men and women between the ages of 40 and 70, who are not yet ready for surgery. SILHOUETTE SOFT can be a wonderful refreshment for that middle group of patients.
However, it is also an excellent option for younger men and women who would like to slow down the effects of ageing skin as the threads can support the skin to prevent sinking and sagging.
How do I best choose the right practitioner for my Thread Lift?
Your decision as to which practice or practitioner to choose should be based on the practitioner’s reputation, the practitioner’s apparent skill and the practitioner’s experience. In addition, the practitioner’s ability to communicate with you in a manner that is professional, sincere, unhurried and that makes you feel comfortable is of utmost importance. Please also see the information on “How to choose a Medical Aesthetics Practitioner”. We hope this helps you make the right choice.
How can I best prepare for the procedure?
There’s a lot you can do to prepare for the SILHOUETTE SOFT treatment.
The team at Cape Medical Aesthetics Centre thanks you for choosing us for your care. We pride ourselves in offering you an exceptional service.
This section provides information that will help ensure you get optimal results from your medical aesthetics procedure. There is a lot you can do to participate in and speed up your recovery. Please read this SILHOUETTE SOFT Pre- and Post-Procedure Information well before your treatment. Your understanding is important so you know what to do or, not to do. In addition, members of the CapeMAC team are available to assist you with any concerns or questions that you might have.
The Time leading up to the scheduled Procedure:
Do not drink alcohol for 3 days before your procedure.
Stop, or at least minimise your cigarette smoking as a general measure to optimise your results.
Do not schedule any other facial procedures/treatments in the 3 weeks before and after the procedure. Please inform the Doctor of any such scheduled procedures and he will advise you accordingly.
If you are taking any medically prescribed medication, let the doctor know immediately as this medication may need to be changed in advance of the procedure.
If you are taking any ‘blood thinning’ medications, please let the doctor know, as they may represent a contra-indication to the treatment.
Do not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory medications for one week prior to, and after your procedure. This includes unscheduled medications such as St John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Omega supplements, Vitamin B or Vitamin E and any multivitamins that contain these vitamins or supplements. These will ‘thin the blood’ and cause increased bleeding during the procedure. Also refrain from eating certain foods that can affect the blood: Salmon, Anchovies, Ginger, Cayenne Pepper, Paprika, Turmeric, Peppermint, Wine, Vinegar, Strawberries, Grapes and other Berries. If you are unsure, ask the doctor or your pharmacist.
Do not take any medication the day before your procedure without consulting with Dr Bagwandeen. Doctor will advise you about taking your regular/chronic medication during the periods just before and after the procedure.
Try to minimise sun exposure to the area being treated. Ensure that you use a suitable sunscreen if exposed to the sun.
The Day of the Procedure:
Please do not wear any make-up, facial perfume or after-shave.
If you have any signs of a skin infection in the area to be treated, we may have to reschedule the procedure to prevent any complications that may occur. Inform and discuss this with the Doctor.
Please arrange for someone to transport you to and from the Cape Medical Aesthetic Centre if the Doctor has indicated that you will be sedated at all during the procedure.
Expect to be with us for between 60-90 minutes, depending on the extent of your treatment.
Please be at CapeMAC about 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
After the Procedure:
Ice can be applied for 10-15 minutes at a time to the treated areas, immediately after the procedure and thereafter to reduce any pain & swelling. Do not apply excessive pressure though.
Dr Bagwandeen might prescribe an antibiotic cream to be applied to the entry and exit points of the sutures twice a day for 5 days.
After the treatment, patients may experience some soreness and pain over the treated areas. Prescribed analgesic medication such as Paracetamol can be taken in case of discomfort. Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Voltaren, etc. for the first 7 days.
Arnica cream or even Zambuc can be gently applied 3 times a day starting the day after the procedure. Some patients may experience redness and heat after applying these creams. This is normal as the cream increases circulation to the area.
Mild swelling and bruising can occasionally occur and may be noticeable for a few days.
The treated area may be tender to touch. You might feel the suture underneath the skin as a result of the area being swollen/inflamed. This is normal and will improve over 5 days and should be gone after 2-3 weeks.
Should you experience severe pain or swelling in the treated area/s, contact us immediately.
Expect 10-14 days for the skin to fully recover its natural aspect. However, you can resume most normal activities within 2-4 days.
Follow-up appointments to ensure the skin is responding and healing as it should are made with Dr Bagwandeen: 3 days after procedure, 1 week after, and 2 weeks after procedure.
What to do/not do after the Procedure:
Try to minimise facial movement as much as possible – excessive movements in particular! This is very important. Be aware of your facial movements when eating/chewing, talking, yawning, smiling etc. Do not yawn. Do not laugh, or smile excessively. Do not chew bubble gum. Avoid smoking. Avoid drinking from a straw.
Tip: It helps to not plan social meet-ups/events during the two to three weeks following the procedure as you will find it hard to adhere to the above when meeting friends/family etc.
Keep your head elevated for the first 7-10 nights when sleeping. Use a second pillow or elevate the head-part of the bed. Sleep face-up and not on the treated areas (7-10 nights).
Wash and dry your face gently, without rubbing or massaging (10-14 days).
Put on make-up, shave and wash hair gently (10-14 days).
Avoid direct sunlight and do not use tanning beds (3 weeks).
Avoid facial massages and all other facial aesthetic treatments (3 weeks).
Avoid sports, in particular high impact sports (e.g. running) and contact sports (e.g. boxing, rugby) (3 weeks).
Do not use saunas or hammams (3 weeks).
Avoid dental procedures (3 weeks).
How is the SILHOUETTE SOFT® lift treatment done?
Your SILHOUETTE SOFT® lift procedure is done in 2 mini stages.
(1) During stage one, through a small incision and using a very fine needle, Dr Bagwandeen inserts the anchoring suture threads into the skin of the facial area that you would like to rejuvenate.
(2) During stage two, Dr Bagwandeen pulls the threads tight to achieve your desired lifting effect.
The treatment requires only local anaesthetic and can take
as little as 30 minutes to perform, up to two hours depending on the size of the area treated (how many sutures are being used and where). Sedation can be given by the doctor if the patient is very anxious and nervous. Usually, no sedation is needed; a hospital stay during or after the procedure is not needed either.
What happends to the suture lift threads after the procedure?
The principle component of SILHOUETTE SOFT® lift threads is polylactic acid. Therefore, the sutures used for your treatment are fully bio-degradable, meaning your body will dissolve them over time. The sutures will not need to be removed (similar to the sutures known for some medical stitching, just much longer lasting). During the next 3 months after the procedure, the suture threads will integrate with the surrounding facial tissue and stimulate the body’s production of collagen in these areas. In addition to the immediate lift of your tissue and smoothing of your skin, your skin will appear naturally fuller over time, even after the sutures have dissolved.
Can I combine the Thread Lift with other Facial Rejuvenation Treatments?
Yes, you ca. The SILHOUETTE SOFT® treatment can be performed in two ways:
1) as a stand-alone procedure or
2) a procedure in conjunction with a facial fillers, liposcution or facial fat transfer to achieve a more dramatic and even longer-lasting result result.*
What is the Downtime for the Thread Lift Procedure with SILHOUETTE SOFT®?
The SILHOUETTE SOFT® treatment requires virtually no downtime. You will experience light swelling in the days following your procedure and some mild tension in the areas that have been elevated. There will be discomfort at the anchor points of the threads. This can easily be managed by common oral analgesics and anti-inflammatories. In some cases, patients experience very slight bruising or a slight depression or skin irregularity at the entry points. These inconveniences disappear a few days after the treatment. The Patient can usually go back to work on the next day (depending on the nature of your work). Some patients prefer to take one or two days off after the procedure, depending on the size of the area treated (how many sutures have been used and where).
What is the Recovery Time for the SILHOUETTE SOFT® Lift Treatment?
Usually, there is no recovery time as such. Should there be any pain or inflammation, this would resolve within a maximum of about two weeks. However, patients are required to minimise facial movements as much as possible for at least one, better two or three weeks after the procedure to avoid putting stress on the sutures. Therefore some patients prefer to return to social activities only within two or three weeks after the SILHOUETTE SOFT® treatment. You will be given simple pre- and post-procedure information to help ensure your treatment is safe. Dr Bagwandeen may give you further advice to ensure your recovery is as quick and easy as possible
